The Southwest Corridor Transportation Coalition along with local legislators and elected officials celebrated the opening of the newest segment of US Highway 212 on September 6, 2022.  

Thanks to the hard work and support of many advocates and leaders, progress continues to be made to expand and improve Highway 212, making it safer and more effective for freight movement.

US Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith as well as Representative Tom Emmer and Representative Dean Phillips for their work in securing funding for US Highway 212 and Trunk Highway 5 in Carver County as part of the Omnibus FY2022 Appropriations bill.

A newly expanded Highway 212 should stretch out to Cologne’s doorstep by the end of this summer. That could bring additional growth to the community much like it has when improvements were made to sections of the east-west thoroughfare through Chaska and Carver.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation is delaying the project to reconstruct U.S. Highway 212 in Renville County until 2023, by one year. The project would reconstruct the highway from Hawk Creek to Renville County Road 6. It includes rebuilding the highway through the city of Sacred Heart.

Motorists can enjoy a smooth and safer ride on Highway 212 from Cologne to Norwood Young America, and bikers and walkers can enjoy the new walking trail and underpass under Highway 212 as crews complete work for 2020. Since June, crews worked to:

  • Repave Highway 212 between Highway 5/25 and Highway 36 in Cologne
  • Construct pedestrian underpass and trails
  • Construct Reduced Conflict Intersection (RCI)

Following a vote by the Carver County Board of Commissioners to fully fund the expansion, Hwy 212 will be widened to four lanes. The county and the Southwest Corridor Transportation Coalition have lobbied for expansion of Highway 212 westward, since the new four-lane portion of the road was completed between Eden Prairie and Carver.
